The Giants' general manager and coach appear to be safe for next season.

co-owner John Mara appears set on retaining general manager Joe Schoen and coach Brian Daboll for 2025, even though they’re 2-5 this season, coming off last year’s 6-11 debacle.next season. He clearly said neither would be fired during the season, while adding, “I do not anticipate making any changes in the offseason.” Note the use of “anticipate.”

Because of that, Mara would look like a fool if he fired Schoen or Daboll after 2024, though it’s certainly his right to do that. He did leave the door ajar with “anticipate.” And he has shown plenty of impatience in recent years, firing McAdoo, Pat Shurmur, and Judge after just two seasons each. Committing to Schoen and Daboll for 2025 also would mean handing them the Giants’ next potential franchise quarterback to draft and develop, since the organization is on track to cutting Daniel Jones after this season. That’s a huge responsibility for Schoen and Daboll. Can they be trusted to get it right?

When Daboll opened 7-2 as a rookie head coach in 2022, it seemed unthinkable that he could get fired after Year 3 — or that Mara would even need to publicly back him seven games into 2024. Yet there Mara was Wednesday night in Manhattan, publicly and strongly backing this Schoen/Daboll regime — a month sooner than he limply backed McAdoo and two months earlier than he anonymously supported Judge .
