The New York Giants opted to retain head coach Brian Daboll despite a dismal 3-14 record in 2024. This decision is now under scrutiny as seven head coaching vacancies across the NFL were filled with promising new hires. The Giants face five of these teams in 2025, raising questions about whether they missed an opportunity to make a change. The article analyzes the potential benefits of a coaching change, highlighting the impressive hires made by other teams and the challenges facing the Giants' current roster and quarterback situation.
Published: Jan. 25, 2025, 6:00 a.m.is somehow back for a fourth season in 2025, despite going 3-14 this past season, after finishing 6-11 in 2023. Should the Giants have fired Daboll ? You can certainly make a legit case for that.
And in 2025, they’ll immediately get a chance to see if — and how — they could’ve upgraded with a new coach. There were seven head coaching vacancies this offseason . The Giants will play five of those teams in 2025. They play the Cowboys twice, of course. And they visit the Patriots, Bears, Raiders, and Saints. Just two of those seven jobs remain open — Saints and Cowboys. It looks like ex-Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy could be the guy in New Orleans. And the Cowboys might promote their offensive coordinator, Brian Schottenheimer, who ran the Jets’ offense from 2006-11. The Patriots hired Mike Vrabel . The Bears got Ben Johnson . And the Raiders went with Pete Carroll . This would’ve been part of the issue for the Giants this offseason: For several reasons, their head coaching vacancy would not have been particularly attractive. How many sought-after head coaching candidates would’ve wanted to come work for hot-seat general manager Joe Schoen, whose moves have wrecked the Giants’ roster? Plus, even if the Giants fired Schoen , they don’t have an easy path to a quarterback solution this offseason. Oh, and as we mentioned, their roster stinks. As for the head coach-seeking teams who the Giants don’t play in 2025, the Jaguars hired Liam Coen and the Jets hired Aaron Glenn . Vrabel was destined for the Patriots, so the Giants surely would not have been able to land him. Nor, you’d think, would they have hired Schottenheimer. But Johnson, Glenn, Coen, Carroll, and McCarthy — plus that Bill Belichick guy — all could have been candidates for the Giants, along with other options. Not all of them would’ve been interested in the Giants, but some might’ve been. Will the Cowboys, Patriots, Bears, Raiders, and Saints — during six total games against the Giants — show co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch what they missed by not firing Daboll? Clearly, not all of the coaches hired in those spots would’ve been options for the Giants. But they’ll all be examples — while playing the Giants — of what happens when you opt for a fresh start. Obviously, it doesn’t always go well. There is risk involved. Remember, in 1995, the Jets fired Carroll after one season and hired Rich Kotite. But Daboll has had plenty more chances over the past three seasons than Carroll had in 1994. Mara has essentially said he wants immediate significant improvement in 2025 — or else Schoen and Daboll will both be out the door next offseason. Given the state of the Giants’ roster and quarterback situation, it’s hard to imagine them winning, say, seven-plus games in 2025. Perhaps by midseason — when Daboll could be canned — Mara and Tisch will be turning their attention to hot head coaching candidates who didn’t land an NFL job this offseason. Like Belichick, whose North Carolina buyout will be just $1 million next offseason.Ex-Giants player — and East Orange, N.J., native — facing mounting legal troubleThank you for relying on us to provide the journalism you can trust.
