“This is a ‘gee-whiz’ type of insect because it is so large,” entomologist Sven Spichiger said. “Even if you aren’t on the lookout for insects, this is the type that people get their phones out and take a picture of – they are that striking.”

How about a giant moth with a wingspan that can reach up to 10 inches?Officials in Washington state are urging people to be on the lookout for Atlas moth after one was found in a garage in the state early in July. The wingspan of an Atlas moth can reach 10 inches, making it one of the largest in the world. It’s the first time an Atlas moth has been reported in the wild in the U.S.

Normally found in the tropics, Atlas moths are federally quarantined pests in the U.S., meaning its illegal to obtain, harbor, rear, or sell live moths whether adults, eggs, larvae, or pupae without a permit from U.S. Department of Agriculture.
