Giant Eagle supermarkets in Cuyahoga County will stop using single-use, plastic bags starting on April 22, which is also Earth Day, and will encourage its customers to use reusable grocery bags instead, the chain announced Tuesday.
Beginning Jan. 1, 2020, Giant Eagle stores -- including the Detroit Avenue location in Lakewood -- stopped using single-use plastic bags. After discontinuing the policy later that year during the pandemic, it now plans to reinstate the policy in the chain's Cuyahoga County stores starting April 22, 2022.
Giant Eagle sells reusable bags for 99 cents each, but will be giving away 100,000 reusable bags at its Cuyahoga County stores beginning the April 22. Those customers who use reusable bags will have the chance to participate in a sweepstakes that provides “multiple opportunities every month to win $10,000,” according to a company news release.
Customers paying through food-assistance programs funded by the government, such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly referred to as food stamps, will not have to pay the paper bag fee.
