After almost a year of planning and construction, the $3.5 million expansion of Brisbane’s popular Riverland has been completed.
But inner-city workers will have to wait a few more days to quench their thirsts in the prime new digs, with its public opening not due until next Monday. The riverside bar added 850 square metres to its footprint, allowing for a capacity of 1000 patrons in the outdoor drinking and dining area.
At the rear of 167 Eagle Street, formerly known as Emirates House, Riverland has latched on to the street food scene, serving from repurposed shipping containers and offering patrons views of the Brisbane River and Story Bridge. The venue’s expansion has added two kitchen concepts to its fare – The Queenslander, offering modern pub grub, and The Traveller, which would rotate global street food, beginning with Mexican.
Australian Venue Co chief operating officer Craig Ellison says the redevelopment was an exciting moment for the Eagle Street precinct. After an invitation-only launch on Wednesday night, the expanded Riverland will open to the public on Monday.“Eagle Street is back,” Ellison said.“With views of the iconic Story Bridge and Brisbane River, the open plan design and subtropical landscaping – and The Queenslander kitchen – Riverland is a quintessentially Brisbane destination.
The new-look bar was built over three tiers and was built over what was an unsightly car park, which has remained undercover. The original open-air beer garden served food from three repurposed shipping container kitchens, which have been replaced by two kitchens, a preparation area and a new container bar.
