Giancarlo Stanton might’ve delivered his signature Yankees moment on Wednesday night.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Despite him pulling off the unthinkable on Wednesday night and stealing a base, Giancarlo Stanton ’s lack of speed had cost the Yankees multiple chances to score earlier this series.
Lefty Kris Bubic threw a 3-1 slider beneath the zone and Stanton demolished it 417 feet into the night, breaking a 2-2 tie and silencing a sellout crowd that spent most of the night amped up for its first playoff game in nine years. The Yankees bullpen made sure it stood up, continuing its strong series by tossing 4 ¹/₃ shutout innings in relief of Clarke Schmidt — making it 13 ²/₃ innings without allowing an earned run through three games.
Schmidt and Seth Lugo dueled early before both handed the ball off to their bullpen with the game tied 2-2 after five innings. Alex Verdugo then moved both runners over with a sacrifice bunt, which Torres followed with a walk to load the bases.
