This article compares the actions of Gi-hun and Sang-woo in Squid Game seasons 1 and 2. It argues that Gi-hun's selfless behavior in season 2 contrasts sharply with Sang-woo's manipulative and self-serving actions in season 1, making Sang-woo appear even more villainous in retrospect.
Gi-hun's actions in Squid Game season 2 put an even bigger emphasis on Sang-woo's villainous moments in season 1 of the hit Netflix series. The cast of Squid Game season 2 includes Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, and Wi Ha-joon, who all reprise their roles from the first season of the series. Given the premise of the series, which follows hundreds of players in a tournament of deadly games, most characters from season 1 do not return for Squid Game season 2 , including Sang-woo.
Sang-woo was one of the main characters in Squid Game season 1, and made it to the final game with Gi-hun. However, while both Squid Game seasons have proved that Gi-hun is a kindhearted, selfless person, Sang-woo's actions in season 1 showed that he was a more conniving player. The story of Squid Game season 2 follows Gi-hun years after he vowed to end the games, and sees him return to help other players. Therefore, by the end of Squid Game season 2, it is clearer than ever that Sang-woo was one of the most villainous characters on the show. Gi-hun's Squid Game Season 2 Story Makes Sang-woo Look Even Worse In Season 1. Gi-hun Wants To Help Other Players In Squid Game Season 2. Close When Gi-hun reenters the games in Squid Game season 2, he is determined to help the other players survive. This is evident in the first game they play, Red Light, Green Light. Gi-hun guides all the other players in Red Light, Green Light in an attempt to reduce the number of deaths. Gi-hun's actions in Squid Game season 2 are a direct contrast to Sang-woo's in the show's first season. Sang-woo viewed the other players as competition, rather than allies, in Squid Game season 1, and continuously sabotaged his own friends.
