Knobby tires, a lifted suspension, and a Work Truck interior lend the latest variant of the new Colorado off-road cred.
This isn't a new concept. Chevrolet's Trail Boss package made its first appearance as part of the then
's lineup. Available for Custom and LT models, the Silverado Trail Boss featured a 2-inch suspension lift, specially tuned Rancho shocks, 32-inch Goodyear tires, a G80 automatic locking rear differential, and trendy red front recovery hooks among its updates.The new 2023 Colorado Trail Boss takes most of its cues from that Silverado version. The Colorado Trail Boss is based on the base Work Truck trim, and adds a 2-inch suspension lift, 3-inch-wider track, the 2.
We definitely missed the Rancho-branded monotube dampers that Chevy uses on the larger Silverado Trail Boss, but the Colorado's twin-tube shocks worked well for the short amount of time we were off-road. With limited wheel travel and damping, we found that too much speed caused excess head-toss and an uncomfortable experience. If fast, off-road wheeling is your style, then the ZR2 is going to be your jam.
When it comes to highway ride quality, the new Colorado Trail Boss is about as good as one would expect from a body-on-frame pickup. The smoothness of the ride depends entirely on the quality of the road surface. Expansion joints, potholes, and general broken pavement are handled with ease. However, poorly maintained highways will send shudders through the truck's rigid chassis, with the twin-tube dampers quickly losing their ability to keep up.
We also appreciate the physical buttons and knobs for HVAC control. The audio system is serviceable, but not great, and we found it interesting that Chevy chose to forgo physical buttons and knobs for functions such as adjusting the head and fog lights and instead integrated them into the infotainment system. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are now standard, though there's no option for a power adjustable passenger seat at any level.
