Getting back in the water midwinter wasn't easy. I kept putting it off, waiting for the perfect conditions but in the end, a desire to beat those midwinter blahs was the catalyst I needed to take the plunge.

It's a little awkward when you've been asked to write a story about your daily cold water swimming habit when you're not doing it anymore.

Firstly, there's the gorgeous bunch who call themselves the Frosties, a friendly, diverse and welcoming lot. Another summer and autumn passed by and I continued to swim every day, then in May this year I took a month off to travel overseas. The daily swim habit took a hiatus. Cold water swimming is having a moment, especially here in Tasmania with groups like the Frosties popping up all over the state.in Hobart, year-round groups are regularly braving the cold water and taking swims in rivers, oceans and lakes across the state.

Buoyant in the tannin waters, watching the sun rise as the grebes and swans glide by. The current picks up any cares and takes them out to sea, leaving me with a sense of calm that lingers for the rest of the day. The optics looked inviting, a golden sky, not a breath of wind and the water smooth and glassy. The air temperature told a different story — a brutal three degrees, the water seven.
