Delaware residents are being asked to 'adopt' a storm drain, monitor it for debris and leaves and become more aware of the environment.
But a new program in the city of Delaware aims for city residents to consider adopting stormwater drains.
Domenech decided that a coordinated, grassroots army of volunteers might be better than the typical team of maintenance workers who periodically check the sewers for trash, leaves and animal carcasses.Adopt-a-Drain program“Be a stormwater hero — adopt a drain!” Domenech said in a prepared statement. “Any person can agree to do a biweekly clean-up on and around a storm drain of their choosing within Delaware City.
Domenech rolled out the program to the larger Delaware community in November in a Stormwater Watch Quarterly newsletter mailed to residents with their utility bills. More details and sign-up information are available online at“I’m happy to help,” said Soliday, also a longtime member of the Sustainable Delaware Ohio environmental community group. “As an adopter, I’ll be keeping the drain clear of debris. This includes leaves in the fall and any kind of trash or litter.
Soliday said he has adopted two drains near his home. In one of them, he said he removed a little over 8 pounds of leaves and other organic debris in one week.
