These are San Antonio's best winter flower replacements for summer annuals in the garden.

We probably have nearly three months of blooms left from zinnias, vincas, begonias, pentas, tropical milkweed and other summer annuals, but the winter annuals also will soon be available. The main winter flower to replace zinnias in the cut flower garden are snapdragons. My favorite is the Rocket selection, but Sonnet is also a good choice for cut flowers. To replace the small-size bloom zinnias like Profusion in containers and especially hanging baskets, consider the Snapshot.

Monarch migration underway. For pollinators, consider fragrant winter annual flowers — stocks, alyssum and sweet peas. Stocks are often slower to reach the market than snapdragons because they need more sun exposure to start blooming, but they are very showy with both intensely colored and pastel blooms in red, white, pink and violet. Also, watch for plants with double blooms.
