The German military, which has seen its numbers dwindle from over half a million to just over 180,000, is now only the fifth largest in Europe.
In a significant shift for Germany 's defense policy , incoming Chancellor Friedrich Merz has announced plans to revitalize the country's military, the Bundeswehr , which has faced decades of underfunding and downsizing since the Cold War.
Merz has pledged a "paradigm shift" in Germany's defensive capabilities, unlocking hundreds of billions of euros for military investment. "This is now the paradigm shift in defense policy that lies ahead of us," Merz said, highlighting the urgency of bolstering Germany's military strength. The move comes amid growing concerns over European security, particularly following the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, which has been described as a "turning point" for the continent. The German military, which has seen its numbers dwindle from over half a million to just over 180,000, is now only the fifth largest in Europe. Ralf Hammerstein, Brigadier General and Commander of the 41st Armored Infantry Brigade, emphasized the need for increased funding, stating, "I think every army in the world, in the history and also in the future, will always claim not to have enough." The potential introduction of a new conscription program is among the initiatives being considered to address the Bundeswehr's shortcomings. Hammerstein noted, "So I think some kind of a obligatory service has to be in place, but it will not happen overnight, but the increase we will see, I guess, starting this year." As Germany embarks on this ambitious military overhaul, the question remains whether a stronger German army will lead to a more secure Europe.
