Currently the UK is only testing around 70,000 people a week for coronavirus
Mr Jenrick said 8,240 individuals were tested on Monday and more than 900 health workers were tested over the weekend.
‘We think within days we will be able to go from our present capacity of 12,750 to 15,000, so that’s a significant increase but still not as far as we’d like it to be, then mid-April is when we expect to be at 25,000.’ The Royal College of Physicians, the Royal College of Nursing and the British Medical Association all say testing of frontline staff is desperately needed.
The Chemical Industries Association acknowledged demand was ‘escalating’ but said it has the chemicals it needs to produce coronavirus tests and deliver them to the NHS.
