Schengen's freedom of movement will be hard to dilute when the German people have benefited greatly

The Lusatian Neisse River in Bad Muskau on the Germany-Poland border and dozens of times a year, I cross European borders on foot or bicycle, often relying on small country lanes or footpaths which meander through fields and forests. Earlier this week, I walked through the lovely landscape park at Bad Muskau on the German-Polish border.

For thousands of people who commute by tram each day from Kehl in Germany across the Rhine into Strasbourg, the Franco-German border is these days a real zone of opportunity. Germany is a country which in recent years has thrived through maintaining convivial relations with its nine Schengen neighbours, and the right to passport-free travel is not being diluted.

The German police entrusted with enforcing Faeser’s edict are less certain. Andreas Rosskopf from the Gewerkschaft der Polizei, the union representing Germany’s police officers, is critical.So, the focus with this new regime is on spot checks, relying on intelligence gathering to help monitor comings and goings at German borders.
