Germany is failing Ukraine, leaving Nato allies no choice but to sideline it ✒️ wallaceme for ipaperviews
At the time, Berlin was failing to provide serious military aid to Ukraine – dispatchingat a time when the Zelensky government was asking for artillery and anti-tank weapons – and actively obstructing Nato allies such as Estonia from sending contributions from their own arsenals, under an export clause that requires the German government’s consent before any defence customers can sell on kit bought from the country.
The bad news is that that bad habit of disrupting the supply of vital weaponry by fellow Nato allies has continued. Indeed, it’s got worse., both to forestall any Russian offensive and to be able to mount the counter-offensive necessary to liberate the territory currently occupied by an army of brutal war criminals.
. It wouldn’t cost Germany anything to do so. They wouldn’t even have to send a single tank of their own, if they didn’t want to. They are simply being asked to allow the customers of the German defence sector to give away their own tanks. A year ago, perhaps German politicians thought that allowing the export of a handful of old howitzers to Ukraine would enrage a soon-to-be victorious Putin, making no military difference but coming at a political cost. Appease Russia, weather any brief criticism, then move on to engage with the new reality after a sad but inevitable Ukrainian defeat. That would have been a craven reason for their behaviour at the time, but a possible reason nonetheless.
