Germany is set to equip its next generation of submarines with an advanced active defense system, the Interactive Defence and Attack System for Submarines (IDAS), capable of engaging air threats without exposing the submarine's sensors. The IDAS system, developed by Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems and Diehl Defence, will be integrated into the new Type 212CD submarines, revolutionizing submarine protection and crew safety.
Germany is poised to equip its next generation of submarines with advanced active defense systems designed to counter threats from sub-hunting helicopters. Reports suggest that these cutting-edge vessels could be operational by the 2030s, made possible by a recent procurement package approved in December. Thyssenkrupp, a prominent German company, confirmed that it has secured long-awaited funding for the Interactive Defence and Attack System for Submarines ( IDAS ).
The IDAS system is designed to allow a submerged submarine to actively engage airborne threats without compromising its own sensors. Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems and Diehl Defence, in collaboration as the IDAS Consortium, will develop a guided missile capable of specifically targeting air threats emanating from underwater. This pioneering technology, according to the company, will be available to international clients and will revolutionize submarine protection and crew safety in demanding future operational scenarios.'We are thrilled that this innovative project can now commence,' stated Oliver Burkhard, CEO of Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems. The company emphasizes that this combination of an advanced guided missile and a novel ejection unit will empower submarine crews to effectively defend against air-based attacks and detection attempts. The Bundeswehr, Germany's Armed Forces, commissioned Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems to develop the advanced air defense system IDAS. IDAS can be deployed when crew members identify a potential threat condition. The operator, upon authorization from the commanding officer, can launch the effector. Crucially, engaging threats with IDAS does not necessitate the submarine risking further detection by exposing mast-mounted optical or Electronic Support Measures (ESM) sensors, or even by surfacing. The IDAS system utilizes an ejection container, housing and deploying missiles through a fully integrated, separate thrust piston system for each missile, ejected individually from a torpedo tube. The ejection container, with dimensions and weight comparable to a standard heavyweight torpedo, facilitates seamless integration into both new submarine construction projects and retrofit solutions for existing submarines, according to Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems. The original plan involved retrofitting the system onto existing submarines, aiming for operational readiness by 2014. However, a decade later, in December 2024, Germany's parliament approved a $5 billion funding package to build four new Type 212CD submarines for the German Navy. This package included $26 million to finalize the development of IDAS, which will now make its debut on the 212CD, as reported by The Maritime Executive. The company further revealed that the IDAS missile is a solid-fuel, rocket-propelled, autonomous missile equipped with an Imaging Infra-Red (IIR) Seeker, based on technology derived from existing advanced programs.
