The new trailer for Gerard Butler’s upcoming action movie, Kandahar, has just been released, teasing an explosive chase through Afghanistan.

A new trailer for Gerard Butler's Kandahar features the star fighting his way across an Afghan desert in an epic race to survive. Butler is best known for starring in the likes of 300 and the popular Has Fallen action trilogy, most recently appearing in Plane. Kandahar, from director Ric Roman Waugh, sees the actor take on the role of CIA operative Tom Harris, who attempts to escape Afghanistan with his interpreter after their cover is blown.

Open Road Films has now released the first trailer for Kandahar, providing a new look at Butler's next action-packed role after Plane. SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY The trailer sees Butler's character sabotage Iran's nuclear weapons program before his covert mission is exposed in a crippling intelligence leak. With his interpreter, played by Navid Negahban, Tom embarks on a dangerous mission across hostile territory in order to reach an extraction point in Kandahar, Afghanistan. The movie also stars Bahador Foladi, Olivia-Mai Barrett, Nina Toussaint-White, Ali Fazal, Fahim Fazli, and Ray Haratian, among others.

Plane, Butler's most recent movie, also follows this pattern, seeing the star playing a military-trained pilot who must rescue his passengers from a local warlord after he's forced to land his plane in enemy territory. Even Greenland, which sees Butler playing more of an everyman instead of a ruthless killing machine, puts the star on his own for long stretches of time as he works against all odds to reunite with his family before a massive comet impacts the Earth.

Like Plane, with Mike Colter's Louis Gaspare, Kandahar also sees the benefit of giving Butler a strong scene partner. The interpreter in the upcoming film will seemingly serve to flesh out more about Butler's character and give him a strong reason to survive beyond just saving his own life. It remains to be seen how Kandahar will compare to Butler's other recent efforts, but the trailer makes clear it will, if nothing else, be an action-packed ride.
