Gerald McFaul, Cuyahoga County's longest-serving sheriff, died Saturday at age 87.CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Former Cuyahoga County Sheriff Gerald T. McFaul, the longest-serving sheriff in county history before his 2010 downfall and corruption conviction, died Saturday at the age of 87.

McFaul was brought up in Cleveland’s Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and graduated from Holy Name High School in 1952. The Democrat from Strongsville served a total of nine years on council, during which time he was elected majority leader. McFaul beat out opponent after opponent in the following decades, retaining the sheriff’s position even when he was up against candidates who, unlike him, came up through the ranks of law enforcement.fall from grace came in 2009, when he resigned amid a series of Plain Dealer stories that detailed a wide range of misconduct in his office.The Plain Dealer’s reporting ultimately prompted an investigation into McFaul’s conduct.
