The former Houston police narcotics officer's alleged lie that led to the Harding Street raid has shifted law enforcement policy and overturned convictions, but jurors were not able to learn that during the trial.
No matter the outcome that jurors arrive at, the Gerald Goines case has already impacted policing in Houston and set wrongfully accused people free.After three weeks of testimony, jurors received the case on Tuesday. The case stems from a January 2019 botched raid, which HPD investigated after.
The state released Jeffrey two years ago, serving six years, after the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals ruled Goines lied to put him behind bars. Legal experts said other cases could still be impacted by Goines. to limit no-knock warrants. It stalled in the Senate, but lawmakers could try again in months when the legislature reconvenes.
"Now, it's not nearly as easy to get a no-knock warrant," Vinas explained. "It has to be signed off by the chief. It has to go to a specific type of judge and a specific office to execute that search warrant."
