Three women who became first-time mums after the age of 45 share their stories.
For many women, the opportunity to have children comes only later in life. An Australian Institute of Health and Welfare report shows a quarter of all women giving birth in 2019 were aged 35 or over and two in seven of these were giving birth for the first time.Credit:“Women are opting to pursue their careers which is one reason they’re delaying motherhood, but it’s also because they haven’t found a suitable partner to raise children with,” says fertility specialist Dr Raewyn Teirney.
“I moved to the UK for work in my early 20s, always having the desire to one day have my own family. After suffering from endometriosis my entire life, a laparoscopy at age 37 revealed that I had a unique womb shape and, according to the doctor, I consequently wouldn’t be able to carry a child. I decided not to follow through as the injection close to my cervix could trigger a miscarriage of all three. And when I saw one of the babies sucking on their thumb in a scan, that was no longer an option. I stayed in bed throughout my pregnancy, and as a hypnotherapist I practised a pregnancy mediation daily. I gave birth to three healthy boys at 34 weeks, in February 2013, through emergency caesarean due to preeclampsia.
I contacted a UK-trained fertility consultant who was at a clinic in Athens, and after thorough discussions and testing, including screening, an egg donor matched mine and my husband’s genetic make-up, such as heritage and hair colour. Six months later we began IVF. Overall, I found the experience in Greece enjoyable and, luckily, I fell pregnant on the first try, aged 46.
As my son is an only child, I’m always mindful of seeking social opportunities for him. I also have to align my energy to that of a young child, which can be challenging sometimes, but also energising. Mostly, I feel with life experience come useful parenting attributes like greater patience and an ability to enforce boundaries.to support women deciding whether to pursue motherhood or not.”Julie Sweet, 48, says becoming her best selfnine IVF attempts at the age of 47.
