ATLANTA—Party crashers don’t tend to thrive in the College Football Playoff, which is invariably dominated by just a few traditional powers. And, Texas Christian didn’t look like a team that belonged in the sport’s most exclusive soirée.
The Horned Frogs were coming off a 5-7 season in 2021, a situation so dire that they hired a new coach, Sonny Dykes, away from Southern Methodist, their crosstown rival in Dallas-Fort Worth. As 2022 began, TCU was unranked and nowhere near the top 25.
