From chic chignons to effortless Cali-girl beach waves, hairstylist George Northwood tells British Vogue about creating Meghan’s most-discussed hairstyles.
There were whispers, at the time, that hairstylist George Northwood was behind that coolly undone chignon that the Duchess of Sussex wore for her wedding reception in May 2018. But as with every working relationship with a member of the royal family, nothing could be confirmed.
It was a case of “you had me at hello” for Northwood and Markle, who were introduced through mutual acquaintances when she was new to London, and on the hunt for a good hairdresser. “I went to meet her and we hit it off straight away,” he tells me. “I think I met her in February, around Valentine’s Day 2018. I was a bit worked up beforehand and then, as soon as I met her, she was just like my California girl clients. She said, ‘I’m a Cali girl’, and I just said, ‘One of my favourites then.
Since the Duke and Duchess relocated to North America with their son, Archie, Meghan and Northwood are now based in different countries – but they still keep in touch. “She always handled the pressure with such grace and professionalism,” the hairstylist says. “We align on so many values and things she stands for are close to my heart. It’s a new chapter, obviously we aren’t living in the same country but I still check in all the time.
