Darth Maul undermines Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey after Lucas resurrected him in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and it works brilliantly.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT One of George Lucas’ most controversial decisions in Star Wars was resurrecting Ray Park's Darth Maul after his supposed death in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace. In the final arc of Star Wars: The Clone Wars season 4, Lucas insisted on having Savage Opress drag Darth Maul back into the action of the galaxy.
Maul believes Palpatine will help him as a mentor on his journey, but Palpatine sends him to fight on Naboo, knowing full well that Maul will likely die. He abandons and rejects Maul as an apprentice. Then, Palpatine moves on to trick Dooku with the same lies he told Maul. Here, Maul’s Hero’s Journey seems to be over, as he falls into the reactor shaft on Naboo.
Death & Rebirth Lies At The Heart Of The Hero's Journey Since Maul continually tries to write himself as the hero of Star Wars despite the universe telling him otherwise, Maul is stuck in a sort of endless loop. After experiencing his abyssal event—surviving getting cut in half by Obi-Wan—Maul should have gone through a character transformation when he returned in The Clone Wars. But while he certainly went through a drastic physical transformation, his soul remained the same.
Despite undergoing two abyssal events where he “died,” Maul refused to go through the rebirthing part of the Hero’s Journey. He never learns the lesson the story is trying to teach him, despite knowing it in his heart. He curses Obi-Wan for taking away his chance at being a hero in Palpatine’s story, which is why he makes it his goal to get revenge. In Maul’s mind, killing Obi-Wan will bring him satisfaction, as it would prove he’d been wronged and that he was the hero of his story all along.
