On November 3, Geoffrey Kamworor of Kenya won the 2019 New York City Marathon in a time of 2:08:13. Albert Korir of Kenya finished second in 2:08:36, while Girma Bekele Gebre of Ethiopia finished third in 2:08:38.
Around mile 20, a lead pack of five—including Kamworor, the 2017 NYC champion and world record holder in half marathon; Albert Korir of Kenya, who won the Houston Marathon earlier this year; Gebre, an unsponsored runner from New York City; Tamirat Tola of Ethiopia; and Shura Kitata of Ethiopia, who finished runner-up in New York City last year—broke away from the pack. In mile 21, Kitata fell off the pack, with the remaining four angling for the win.
Kitata, who finished fifth in 2:10:39, again showed the aggressive racing style that broke open last year’s New York race. He made a bold surge at the gun, splitting 5:02 for the first mile up the Verrazano Bridge, well ahead of the lead pack. Kitata led for most of the first half, splitting 1:04 for the half marathon.
