After fleeing a mob war in Naples, Gennaro Panzuto hid out in the most unlikely location
It was such an unlikely hiding place Vittorio Pisano, chief of the Naples Flying Squad, had to look it up on a map. "Mostly criminals prefer the south of France or Spain - I have never heard of a mafia man being held in Preston before.
Soon he came to the attention of the Camorra - Naples' mafia clans. He was ordered to kill a rival mobster, but the the target was arrested before the Panzuto could get to him. It was time for him to make himself scarce. During the course of his racketeering Panzuto had forged links with an organised crime group in the north west of England.
Panzuto rented a caravan and his wife and children soon visited him from Italy. Witty, friendly and generous, often handing out expensive Italian shoes and leather jackets, he became popular with his neighbours, despite often breaking the park's 5mph speed limit in his Porsche. Mr Bury's pals even joked his new Italian friend might be a 'Mafia man'. Later Panzuto gave Mr Bury, a Northern Soul fan, a pair of expensive black Tuscan leather dancing shoes.
It worked - soon the debt was paid. In return for the favour the OCG showed Panzuto how their VAT fraud worked. But, perhaps lulled by the distance or the now hands-off nature of his work, Panzuto began making mistakes.
