Lawmakers amended a bill Tuesday afternoon that would prohibit transgender high school girls from playing women’s sports by removing a provision that could have required genital examinations when an athlete’s sex is in question.
that inserted in the so-called “Save Women’s Sports Act,” or HB 61, which prohibited trans girls and women from playing girls and women’s high school and college sports, sponsored by Republican Reps. Jena Powell, of Darke County, and Reggie Stoltzfus, of Stark County.
Supporters of the bill say that a transgender girl or woman could have more muscle strength, could run faster and possess other physical advantages that boys and men generally have.that seeks to be fair to all athletes while protecting students’ privacy.
She said the OHSAA has provided rulings on 15 transgender females — seven high school students and eight seventh and eighth graders — between 2015-2021 out of the 400,000 students in grades 7-12 who annually participate in OHSAA-sanctioned sports.he doesn’t like the transgender student athlete ban, because he thinks it is an issue for organizations outside of government to regulate, such as the OHSAA.
