Genesis, Hyundai Motor's luxury car brand, is making a significant shift towards electrification in the UK market. Starting this year, Genesis will exclusively sell electric vehicles in the UK, marking a move away from combustion engine models.
Genesis, the luxury car brand under Hyundai Motor, is making a bold move in the United Kingdom by exclusively selling electric vehicles (EVs) starting this year. While the company will continue to sell its remaining inventory of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles, these are expected to be depleted by summer. After that point, the Genesis showroom will feature only three EV models: the Electrified G80 sedan, Electrified GV70 SUV, and GV60 crossover.
All three EVs will receive refreshed versions in 2023. The Electrified G80, launching in April, will boast an extended wheelbase and increased driving range, while the updated Electrified GV70 SUV will arrive this summer with enhanced range. The GV60 crossover, sharing its 800-volt platform with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6, also received a refresh this year.Looking ahead, Genesis plans to introduce more EVs to the UK market, including a production version of the performance-oriented GV60 Magma and the upcoming flagship GV90 SUV. In addition to EVs, Genesis intends to expand its UK lineup to include hybrids in the future, aiming to attract a broader customer base with diverse powertrain options. This strategy aligns with the growing popularity of EVs in the UK, which saw a significant increase in EV registrations last year, outpacing other regions. Genesis directly benefited from this trend, with approximately 80% of its UK sales in 2022 being all-electric models. The GV60 emerged as the best-selling model, followed by the Electrified GV70 and Electrified G80.Genesis is also shifting its sales approach in the UK. The brand will expand its dealer network by adding up to 15 new dealerships this year, a substantial increase from its current three physical 'studios'. This strategic move signifies Genesis' ambition to solidify its position as a recognized premium luxury car brand in the UK market. Johnny Miller, Genesis UK's brand director, emphasized the brand's focus on delivering a premium experience and creating desirability. He stated, 'We want to create that desirability of the brand; we have a plan and a strategy to become a recognized premium luxury car brand in the UK. But not to just chase volume. We've not been created by the Hyundai corporation to chase volume. We've been created to demonstrate the experience a Korean company can deliver.
