The Hainesville General Store has been in operation since 1883.
Co-owners Emily and Paul Csencsits are keeping the store’s signature attraction, a renowned selection of 16 homemade pies, and in a modernized touch are accepting credit cards and online orders. Customers typically drop by for breakfast or lunch.
Paul Csencsits said he and his wife have no plans to bring back the checkerboard. They also removed a long table with benches in order to free up space, he added. Her husband, who previously worked in retail management, mentioned that the store — located just two miles from their home — was for sale.Independent general stores were the precursors to Wawa, Quick Chek and other chains that flourish throughout New Jersey. They were at their peak in the 1800s, frequently serving as the primary business in small communities.
The store bottles its own orange cream soda, and has some menu items honoring its home state and loval names. The “Jersey Burger” — a half-pound beef patty with Taylor ham, American cheese and a fried egg — is $12.99.
