Playoffs? Playoffs?!? Jaguars fans shouldn't rule out the possibility of playoff football, Gene Frenette writes, whether in the not-too-distant future or even — really — this year. Here's why.

Playoff upsets of the Buffalo Bills and Denver Broncos made those ‘96 Jaguars legendary. It remains a memory never to be forgotten, just for the improbability of how they won those postseason games and how they even got there.

“Doug said it himself, ‘we’re not going to accept anything less than championship football here,’" said receiver Christian Kirk. “That’s our mindset, our mentality. We want to work to get to the postseason. We haven’t lost sight of that goal. “Tom’s not so bad when you’re winning,” said former Jaguars tight end Pete Mitchell, who also played for Coughlin at Boston College. “It sucks when you’re losing.”

“We were in a miserable situation with Coughlin for a little bit and we weren’t having fun. Then we started stacking wins. We were just living in the moment. Our mindset during that winning streak was more, ‘let’s just get better, maybe for next year.’ It was not thinking, ‘let’s get better for the playoffs.’ ”

For as long as they’re not mathematically eliminated, these Jaguars cling to the belief they’re good enough to be one of those NFL teams that can rally in the homestretch and become a postseason participant. If that happens, the Jaguars likely win the AFC South because two of their wins would be over the first-place Titans , who still have games left against playoff contenders in Philadelphia, the Dallas Cowboys and Los Angeles Chargers.
