Recent Gen-Z college graduates are facing challenges entering the workforce. A General Assembly survey revealed that over a quarter of executives wouldn't consider hiring recent graduates. While knowledge isn't the issue, surveyed managers cite a lack of critical interpersonal skills, or ' soft skills ,' as the primary concern.
These skills, including communication, problem-solving, creativity, collaboration, and adaptability, are crucial for professional success but are often developed through experience rather than instruction. This shortage of soft skills is leading companies to hire fewer college graduates, impacting the broader American workforce. The Strada Institute and Burning Glass Institute found that over half of recent four-year college graduates are underemployed a year after graduation. Managers are also feeling the strain, with a fifth considering quitting due to the stress of managing Gen-Z workers. Social isolation during the pandemic is seen as a contributing factor to younger workers feeling unprepared for the workforce.
