A story about Troy Bonde and Winston Alfieri, two USC college students who started a successful pasta sauce brand after taking a risk by wiring $9,000 to a Chinese manufacturer they had never met.
Troy Bonde and Winston Alfieri, a Gen Z duo, started their pasta sauce brand that now brings in $1 million a month in 2020. During the Covid-19 pandemic, while they were sent home from USC, the Los Angeles natives saw a business opportunity. They came up with the idea of a combined device that could dispense sanitizer and take temperature simultaneously. They reached out to a medical manufacturer in China and learned they already had a product in production.
The students got a sample and pitched it to a local California school district, securing a purchase order for nearly $20,000 worth of devices. To fulfill the order, they borrowed $9,000 from their parents and wired it to their Chinese manufacturer, a decision they describe as both daring and terrifying. A week and a half later, two pallets of devices arrived at their parents' doorstep.
