Gemini 3 emerges as agentic AI, executing complex tasks, collaborating like a coworker across modalities.

I am an MIT Senior Fellow & Lecturer, 5x-founder & VC investing in AIShanghai,China-Feb.17th 2024: Google Gemini, OpenAI ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot app icons on screen. Assorted AI mobile appsThere is a brand-new Gemini model out from Google this week, and it’s turning heads as more of an agentic update, and a system that’s able to accomplish complex workflows, so to speak.

People are calling Gemini 3 a “massive jump” over the previous model . It’s interesting because Google is now putting Gemini versions into devices, and deploying them on the edge for users. Demis Hassabis of DeepMind fame, a Nobel prize winner for Alphafold, is calling Gemini 3 the “best model in the world for multi-modal understanding.” Hassabis has appeared at Davos to talk about the future of AI, and is quite a big voice in artificial intelligence development. Then there’s this from chief AI architect, Koray Kavukcuoglu, at Reuters: “We think Gemini has set quite a new pace in terms of both releasing the models, and getting them to people faster.” In general, those who are giving Gemini 3 a test run are citing better multimodal capabilities with video and other formats, and an “agent-ready systems model” that has the goods to really go autonomous.I was looking for quotes on Gemini 3 from individuals in the AI space, and I didn’t have to look any further than the blog of Ethan Mollick, One Useful Thing, where this esteemed voice in AI talks about his experience with the new model. Essentially, Mollick treated the new model like an agent, and instead of giving it detailed prompt, he just asked it to “do stuff” to demonstrate how far AI has come in just a few years. You can see from his provided screenshots and other material how the model became what he calls a “thinking and doing partner” for humans.Mollick is fond of otters, so back in the day, he was having simpler models write limericks and other poems about otters. I thought I would include this here, as a product of yesterday’s LLM:It chose a cozy nest,But in addition to this creative ode, Mollick talked about how a prior model could write about a plot where someone got away from a mad otter with candy. This is where we start to see how LLMs have moved from just talking about things, to doing them.Instead of just talking about using candy to escape an angry otter, the model went out and built a small game to demonstrate this: “In 2022, AI could describe the engine,” Mollick wrote. “In 2025, AI can code the engine, design the interface, and let you pilot the ship yourself.”Later in the blog post, Mollick talked about getting Gemini 3 to do Ph.D.-level work, even choosing sources and putting a paper together. It’s all very impressive, and it’s important to keep in mind that these new models do what people do on a computer. They don’t just do programming – they do things like file retrieval, analysis, desktop management, and much more. “I don’t communicate with these agents in code,” Mollick said. “I communicate with them in English, and they use code to do the work. Because Gemini 3 is good at planning, it is capable of figuring out what to do, and also when to ask my approval.” In other words, if an agent can open a word processor, put a poem or piece of prose or a letter inside that, take that file and mail it with an email, then you have something that looks agentic, for the new AI world of tomorrow. Another thing that Mollick revealed was that Gemini 3 actually has a task inbox, where the model will message the human user to ask them about points in a project where they may get stuck. That’s interesting as we ponder the role of AI as coworkers, collaborators, and yes, partners in knowledge work.Anyway, that’s some of what people are hearing about Gemini 3 as we get this new model incorporated into our AI timeline.
