The announcement was made by Returning Officer Tan Meng Dui, CEO of the National Environment Agency.The Elections Department said in a press release, “Under the law, Polling Day at any General Election shall be a public holiday. Every employer shall on Polling Day allow every elector in his employ a reasonable period of time for voting.”
In a national address on his Facebook page and on free-to-air television and radio, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong explained the reasons in calling for the General Election now, citing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The dissolution of Parliament by President Halimah Yacob on Lee’s advice comes more than three months after the release of the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee report.Related stories
