One of Alaska’s largest cable TV, internet, and phone service providers will be getting rid of its cable package for good next year.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska -
In a letter sent out on Monday, General Communication Inc. informed its customers that the company will “sunset” its television service sometime in the middle of 2025. GCI cited the continually growing shift from traditional cable TV viewership to online streaming services as the key factor in the decision.“We are proud of our decades-long history of providing cable TV service to Alaskans, but we believe the right path forward is to support customer choice on video by focusing our resources on providing the best internet and mobile data experience in Alaska,” GCI wrote in the letter.
In response to a request for company viewership numbers from Alaska’s News Source, a GCI spokesperson did not provide information on its cable TV base at the time of publication. The company also stated in the letter that customers who use its cable TV package do not need to take any action now, but those who use its Yukon TV service can also use the device to access mainstream apps such as Netflix, Disney+, Paramount+ and others. It also said users looking for other live TV options can check out platforms such as YouTube TV and Hulu.
