California Gov. GavinNewsom continues to pretend to care about gas prices Commentary from ZacharyFaria:
California is looking at fining oil companies for “making too much money,” according to the Associated Press, because gas prices per gallon in the Golden State are now $2.60 higher than the national average. “We’re burning up,” Gov. Gavin Newsom said. “We’re choking up. We’re heating up because of these folks. And people are barely able to pay their bills because of these folks.
California Democrats could lower the gas tax at any time, but instead, the state increased the gas tax in July. At the time, the average price for a gallon of gas in California was $6.27, compared to the national average of $4.84. None of this really bothers Newsom or his California Democratic colleagues. Voters already affirmed his terrible governance in the 2021 recall and his 2022 reelection. But Newsom also has his sights set on the presidency, which means he can’t simply be seen as the unconcerned elitist he is. If Newsom had his way, no one would even be buying gas: California plans to ban the sale of gas-powered cars by 2035.
But “let them buy electric vehicles” doesn’t sell well to voters, even if some environmental zealots essentially admit that they are happy that gas isn’t affordable. So instead, Newsom has decided to pretend he is standing up to greedy oil companies when, in reality, he is the one who is making gas more unaffordable for everyday Californians.
