Republican lawmakers plan to introduce a bill to prevent any ban on gas stoves in New Jersey, even though top Democrats have not publicly supporting such a ban.
Commissioner Richard Trumka Jr. called them a “hidden hazard” and said “any option is on the table” to regulate them. This comes researchersin December linked 13% of childhood asthma cases with stoves that burn natural gas because of pollutants they emit.
On a federal government level, New Jersey U.S. Rep. Jeff Van Drew, R-2nd Dist., said he would introduce legislation in Congress to stop U.S. agencies from banning gas stoves.” and “the Consumer Product Safety Commission, which is independent, is not banning gas stoves.” “A federal ban on gas stoves may be on hold for now, but we know Governor Murphy’s expensive green energy plan would force New Jersey families and businesses to electrify everything, including their stoves, water heaters, and furnaces,” Pennachio said.The governor’s proposal does call for electrifying buildings and water heating to reduce emissions in the battle against climate change. But it does not mention stoves or other appliances.
