Gas prices surge past $3. Here's where gas is most expensive — and cheapest — for Memorial Day

Hawaii's the only other state in the same ballpark, with regular gas prices averaging $3.93 a gallon.

A preview of what that could look like came earlier this month when the Colonial Pipeline, a major artery delivering fuel from Gulf Coast refineries to the East Coast, was shutdown for about a week due to a cyber attack, prompting widespread outages at stations in many states. An out of service bag covers a pump handle at a gas station on May 12 in Fayetteville, North Carolina, caused by the shutdown of the Colonial Pipeline due to a cyber attack.
