The national average price for regular gas decreased to $3.011 per gallon on Tuesday, a drop from Monday’s price of $3.018,have been trending downward since the summer and are significantly cheaper than prices from the first half of this year. Tuesday’s national average price for a gallon of regular gas is the lowest on record since May 2021, when the average cost was $2.
However, even with the substantial decrease in gas prices over the last half of the year, prices remain higher now than when President-electwas in office between January 2017 and January 2021. With Trump set to take office on Jan. 20, 2025, it remains to be seen what effect his presidency will have on gas prices. Gas prices in Washington, D.C., continue to be an outlier in the region, with a price of $3.233 for a gallon of regular gas. This was the same price as Monday and ever-so-slightly less expensive than a week ago, when regular gas cost $3.24 per gallon. Overall, regular gas prices in Washington have fluctuated between $3.23 per gallon and $3.31 per gallon over the last 31 days.
