"Manchester United had to buy that player, and I think that's why they always had to. They broke transfer records for Keane, they broke transfer records for Rooney, they tried to sign Shearer, tried to sign Gascoigne. Erik ten Hag might find it challenging to replicate the same strategy today, specifically attracting top talents from rivals such as Manchester City, Arsenal or Liverpool. After all, those clubs have become regular contenders for the Premier League title and more, while United have fallen way off the pace compared to Fergie's reign of dominance.
