Man City midfielder Mateo Kovacic somehow stayed on the field despite two late challenges - one very similar to the tackle that left Curtis Jones with a red card after a VAR check as Liverpool lost at Tottenham last week

Gary Neville believes Mateo Kovacic was lucky to avoid a red card for his challenge on Arsenal's Martin Odegaard that resulted in a yellow card for the Man City midfielder.

Neville, on commentary for Sky Sports, even initially suggested that Kovacic's challenge was worse than the one that Curtis Jones saw red for last week, when the Liverpool midfielder caught Tottenham man Yves Bissouma after his foot rolled over the top of the ball. But unlike Kovacic, VAR official Darren England told referee Simon Hooper to check the monitor, where he arrived to see a still image of Jones making contact with his studs on Bissouma, and he was quickly sent off for the offence.

And Neville, after seeing Kovacic make similar contact with Odegaard, said: "Last week was similar. But I thought that was a genuine challenge for the ball. This one is different. He's not getting there."
