With the incomings of Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui soon set to be completed, Manchester United will once again have a new-look defence ahead of the new season
Gary Neville has long worried about the lack of cohesion in Manchester United's defence - with his fears set to be exacerbated by the signings of Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui.
The defensive pair both played under Erik ten Hag at Ajax and will likely be important cogs in the Dutchman's defence. Ten Hag has not been able to select a consistent backline for some time due to a combination of form and injury issues, with Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane, and Victor Lindelof all missing chunks of action at various points.
The Portugal international was in line for special praise from Neville after providing an assist for Scott McTominay's late winner in a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa last season. The 25-year-old was earmarked by the ex-England defender as a player United should persist with and allow him the opportunity to play with a settled backline for once.
“I think if he can start playing in a really confident back four and a settled back four… it’s always changing and he’s never really got a constant presence outside of him on that right hand side – I had that for years, where I could build a relationship!
