Although Off Campus focuses more on the sport of hockey than Heated Rivalry, the story is still extremely character-driven. Hockey enthusiasts will get enough of the game to satisfy them.
However, people who give zero care about hockey can get just as much out of Off Campus because the story is character-driven rather than plot-driven. Off Campus follows a Bridgerton format, so each season has a different pair centering the story. With Garrett and Hannah as the main characters, the first season gives extra time to them. This is clear from the opening minute of the show, which shows their personalities and their meet-cute.
Alongside these things, Off Campus shows us Garrett’s gigantic tattoo that says “Nullum Gratuitum Prandium” stretching across his shoulder blades in big, bold letters. This is a change from the Off Campus books where he has a fire tattoo on his arm, instead. His tattoo in the show is much more meaningful, though. Shockingly, the tattoo is never verbally acknowledged in Off Campus season 1.
Hannah never asks about ink. He never brings it up, even though it would have made sense to discuss the tattoo at multiple points in the story. Instead, it’s just there, leaving the audience with questions to ponder. The tattoo literally translates to"there is no free lunch," but it figuratively means that everything in life has to be earned.
Nothing is handed out for free. This speaks to the core of who Garrett is as a character. He wants to prove that he earns everything, rather than being handed extra help by his father or his coaches.
However, the answer to the question is just as interesting as the background story. Why Belmont Cameli Chose Garrett's "Nullum Gratuitum Prandium" Tattoo As explained in Teen Vogue, actor Belmont Cameli, who plays Garrett in the cast of Off Campus, came up with the tattoo idea, as it was his high school wrestling team's motto. He thought it would connect with Garrett's core values. His entire drive as a character is proving that he deserves his success.
He won't take a sponsorship that wants him and his dad together. He won't let his coach talk to the teacher about giving him a better grade just so he can play. He even puts his pride aside to ask Hannah for help. Off Campus has already been renewed for season 2, and filming is ongoing.
It’s important to acknowledge that he does have privilege. However, privilege doesn’t mean effort wasn’t put in. It just means that there aren’t as many barriers. In the case of Garrett, he works extremely hard to prove that he deserves what he’s given.
What’s more, he wants to get his success off his own merits instead of relying on the legacy created by his abuser. This connects to Cameli's other thoughts about the tattoo. He believed the location of the tattoo was equally important because of the weight of his last name.
Any time he puts on his hockey jersey, he has to be seen as Phil Graham’s son. However, when he takes it off, his core tenet, “Nullum Gratuitum Prandium,” is there, where his name used to be. It’s the difference between the version of us that the world sees and the version of us that we know to be true. What’s more, the tattoo foreshadows Garrett Graham’s ending.
His father congratulates him on starting the fight and then tells Garrett that he’s just like him. This represents the “Graham” version of himself that everyone sees.
However, he responds by cutting his father off, representing the part of himself that wants to be defined by his hard work, not his father. It’s a really powerful moment, and the beautiful tattoo in Off Campus reflects that.
