The Garmin Forerunner 165 is one of easiest-to-recommend Garmin watches in years. It’s the rare Garmin with high-end features that doesn’t cost a fortune.

There’s not too much wrong with the Forerunner 165 based on my use — lots of running, all-day tracking, plenty of gym workouts and a bit of hiking. Here are the most negative parts that stick out from that sort of use. This is where you’re given a percentage score at the end of each session to show how well you stuck to the plan. Without these, you’re left to judge how well things went yourself, which may not be ideal if you want to challenge yourself with relatively tough workouts at times.Dual-band GPS is one of the few missing hardware features of the Forerunner 165. I typically think of this as something I don’t really need, as someone who tends to run on normal streets and parks.

When I use the always-on mode, which keeps the screen on all day, I end up with less than half of the stated stamina. Four days, or even a little less when I’m out for long runs days in a row, is not unusual.
