MIL-STD-810 durability and 10 ATM water resistance withstand drops, rain, snow, and submersion during outdoor activities. Multi-band GPS tracks location across GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo satellite systems for accurate positioning on trails, in canyons, and under tree cover. Heart rate, Pulse Ox, and sleep tracking run in the background, and the battery lasts up to 24 days in smartwatch mode.
The Instinct 3 uses multi-band positioning to simultaneously receive signals from GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo satellites, improving location tracking in challenging terrain. Pre-loaded mapping includes basic hiking and running routes, and TracBack navigation guides you back along your original path if you lose orientation. More than 30 pre-loaded sports apps support activities such as hiking, running, cycling, swimming, and skiing. Multisport mode chains together different activities for triathlons, brick workouts, and other multi-discipline events.
Activity tracking includes GPS-based pace, distance, and elevation, and metrics save for post-workout review. Instinct 3 watches feature a combination of a fiber-reinforced polymer and a metal-reinforced bezel, which help protect against damage from impacts such as drops and bumps that may occur in outdoor conditions. It meets the U.S. Department of Defense military standard of durability, which includes testing for thermal, shock, and water resistance.

Bluetooth pairs the watch with iOS or Android phones, and the Garmin Connect app syncs data, notifications, and activity history. Battery life reaches up to 24 days in smartwatch mode and up to 30 hours in continuous GPS tracking mode. The Instinct 3 makes a few trade-offs typical of rugged outdoor smartwatches. The case is larger and thicker than those of slim smartwatches, and notification interactions on iOS allow viewing only, not replying.
However, you still get multi-band GPS, MIL-STD-810 durability, and up to 24 days of battery life in smartwatch mode. Unfortunately, some advanced training features and detailed maps require a Garmin subscription or extra purchase.
