One of the most obvious plants blooming now is Texas mountain laurel. It is obvious for a number of reasons, including its showy purple blooms integrated around the surface of the shiny evergreen foliage. Also noticeable is the fragrance for the three weeks it keeps blooming. Here in San Antonio we mostly compare the fragrance to grape Kool-Aid. When I was young we described it as the smell of grape bubblegum.
