“If pruned right, you will have roses through the whole season,” said Glen Risse.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Roses are the cornerstone of many different occasions, from Valentine’s Day to Mother’s Day, to anniversaries.
He said roses are the first thing the greenhouse plants every year. “Our roses are generally timed out so that we sell them from Mother’s Day on.” If a node is left behind, it’ll take about four to six weeks before a new rose blooms. “If pruned right, you will have roses through the whole season. If you prune it wrong, you may have tons of small roses,” Risse explained.
When buying one from the store, check the stem for bendiness. “If you take the stem and you put it between your fingers and push on it with your thumb and it bends, it’s still alive. If it snaps, don’t buy it,” advised Risse.
