NYC sanitation commissioner Kathryn Garcia pledged to institute a mandatory recycling program for food and yard waste if elected mayor — making good on an unfulfilled 2013 campaign promise from Mayor Bill de Blasio
NEW YORK — Rotting trash is seeping into the discourse of the upcoming mayor’s race.
“I think it was a lost opportunity,” Garcia continued. “We should’ve been completely rolled out by 2018. We could’ve been much further along than we were and I think really made a difference in the city.” “I leave with a heavy heart, as many of our most innovative programs designed to fight climate change were the first to fall to the budget axe,” she wrote. “Climate change is not going away due to the pandemic and confronting it demands sustained leadership to protect the city.”
Bill Neidhardt, de Blasio’s spokesperson, blamed the pandemic and ensuing fiscal crisis for the budget cuts. “The pandemic has robbed our city of many opportunities this year, organics recycling included in that list, but we will come back and fight our way out of this hole,” he said. Eric Adams, the Brooklyn Borough president, has $2.2 million in his campaign account. As a Black former cop with a more politically moderate platform, his supporters believe he will occupy a lane Stringer and Wiley do not.
