Garcia: As public support for legalized abortion has grown, its opposition has become louder
Pro-life and pro-choice demonstrators during a protest outside the U.S. Supreme Court in Washington, D.C., U.S., on Tuesday, May 3, 2022. Abortion rights suddenly emerged as an issue that could reshape the battle between Democrats and Republicans for control of Congress, following a report that conservatives on the U.S. Supreme Court were poised to strike down the half-century-old Roe v. Wade precedent.
This message helped Cruz carry the 2016 Iowa caucuses, but did little to slow Trump’s march to the GOP nomination or his general-election triumph that November. What might surprise you is the fact that all five of those justices were nominated by presidents who publicly defined themselves as pro-choice before they made it to the White House.
You could argue that Bush was only 31 during his congressional campaign and still in the process of defining himself and his belief system. In a June 1980 interview with reporter John Lofton Jr., the elder Bush, who was 56 at the time, said, “I’ll have to tell you I don’t know exactly when life begins.”When Lofton asked how much time Bush had devoted to thinking about abortion, he said, “Not that much, frankly.”
