Councilman John Courage will try for the second time in four years to reduce the number of firearms in San Antonio.
District 9 Councilman John Courage is working to organize a San Antonio gun-exchange event this year. One of the most maddening aspects of gun violence in this country is the sense of powerlessness that it creates; the sense that we’re at the mercy of politicians who would prefer to either pretend that the problem doesn’t exist or talk it away by suggesting that the way to ensure our safety is to have more — not less — firearms on the streets.is aware of that collective sense of powerlessness.
“I’m targeting it toward the fall. I’d like to get it around the time of Thanksgiving or Christmas, in that holiday season,” Courage said on this week’s episode of the Express-News’“We can ask people to turn in weapons they no longer want, that they feel are a danger in their household, that maybe they’ve found, and exchange those for gift certificates, so that people can go buy food for the holiday or go buy Christmas presents for their kids.
“I’ve always said this: You get one gun off the street, you may be saving a life or stopping a crime from happening,” Courage said. “If you get 10 guns or 100 guns or several hundred guns, then I just multiply that out in my own mind.” In August 2019, in the wake of mass shootings at an El Paso Walmart, a Sutherland Springs church and a high school in Santa Fe that combined to take the lives of 59 people, Courage collaborated with then-Councilwoman Jada Andrews-Sullivan on a proposal for a gun-buyback pilot program.
