San Antonio Democrat Roland Gutierrez is gearing up for a likely 2024 run against U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz.
Two sources close to Gutierrez, a San Antonio-based Democratic state senator, say he is nearly certain to challenge Cruz for the U.S. Senate seat that Cruz has held since 2013.
Because Gutierrez won re-election last year and won’t have to defend his Texas Senate seat again until 2026, a race against Cruz would be a free shot for him. He could run for the U.S. Senate in 2024 without relinquishing his current seat. “I think it’s changed his service completely,” one source said. “This has really focused him on those who have been left behind by their government in the most egregious way.”
He will argue that the Republican political monopoly in Texas has resulted in an obsession with culture-war demagoguery and a neglect for the issues that matter the most: basic infrastructure, education, health care, gun safety and electrical-grid reliability. The hyper-partisan Cruz is a divisive figure even in his home state, as shown by his narrow, 2.6-percentage-point victory the last time he defended his seat — in an intense 2018 battle with former El Paso Congressman Beto O’Rourke.
